A crack found in the span of the Interstate 40 bridge connecting Tennessee and Arkansas caused the bridge to be shut down more than three weeks ago, a closure which Arkansas Trucking Association president has estimated to be costing the industry about $2 million a day.
Shannon Newton, president of the Arkansas Trucking Association, gave the estimate. Tennessee Trucking Association president Donna England said the closure was also adding additional costs for companies to operate during a truck driver shortage.
England spoke about the additional costs during a meeting with U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in Tennessee on Thursday. Buttigieg had traveled to Tennessee to discuss the effects the I-40 bridge closure had on freight transportation.
