Carrie Villines, Avail activity director The newest senior living community in Cleveland is up to something big for Earth Day, which is Thursday, April 22. Avail, an assisted living and memory care community opening mid-May 2021 off 1400 Stuart Road NE, recently planted one tree per resident around the community. Officials said, As part of this effort going forward, Avail is committed to planting 72 trees in the green area surrounding the seven-acre community. Each tree will be planted in honor of a resident and will provide future generations with a gift benefiting our environment for the next 250 years.

The event includes 112 community tree pickup sites and more than 4,000 individual tree-planting locations. The event is organized every year by Tennessee Environmental Council, a non-profit organization based in Nashville, with Tennessee s Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry playing a vital role in this event.
“In a rough pandemic year, it is heartwarming to see thousands of volunteer participants planting trees and planting hope for our future,” says Cynthia Hernandez, Tree Program Manager at Tennessee Environmental Council.

Tennessee Tree Day 2021 is March 20, and students can register to participate until March 7.
A donation is required to participate in the event, but the recommended donation is only $1.99 per tree. Those facing financial hardship can still participate and receive a tree at a discounted rate or for free by emailing tec@tectn.org.
Participants should expect the trees they receive at pick up to look similar to this.
Those who register to participate must pick up their trees from their chosen pickup site on March 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The local pick up site for Carter County is at First Presbyterian Church, 119 West F Street, Elizabethton, Tenn.
