Wilmington-area gun violence, crime at staggering high

The city of Wilmington is seeing a significant number of lives lost or changed forever due to shootings involving people in their early 20 s and younger. At Tuesday s Wilmington City Council meeting Mayor Bill Saffo said, Our city is not immune to violence. When acts of violence occur, we understand that people want answers. In reply to that, Wilmington Police Department Chief Donny Williams reminded the public to remain patient as they thoroughly investigate the shooting.  Our hearts go out to all affected by this senseless act of violence, Williams said. We intend on taking time to seek justice. We aren t going to rush this. We need to have time to get to the facts of what happened.

Wilmington gun violence increases, police say teens involved

I ve never seen anything like this. Wilmington Police Department Chief Donny Williams expressed his shock as he stood behind a table covered with 52 confiscated guns at a press conference on Monday. Those guns are just some of the firearms that have been seized in the last 30 days in the city of Wilmington. Police have confiscated a total of 91 guns in Wilmington since Feb. 6, and the New Hanover County Sheriff s Office has seized another 45, Williams said. “It has become almost a nightly occurrence for our officers and deputies to encounter an armed individual when they’re out doing their jobs,” he added.
