We are joined by Armstrong Williams longtime radio, tv talk show host, author, thank you for being with us here on washington journal this morning. Good morning and thank you so much for having me. Host we started our segment last hour with Michael Hopkins saying we asked both of you on today to talk about the reaction last week to the death of george floyd at the hands of the minneapolis police. But as the protests have grown and the civil rest has grown and writing, we want to get your reaction overall to what weve seen particularly in the last three days over the weekend across the country. Guest you know, the beauty of america is our right to protest in a very peaceful way. The majority of the protesters are very peaceful and they had the moral high ground no different than the one when you had the terrorist attack on Emanuel Church in charlestown. Members of that community, even though they thought there would be looting and burning, [inaudible] was one of those killed for no reas
The president pro tempore the senate will come to order. The chaplain, dr. Black, will lead the senate in prayer. The chaplain let us pray. God of our destiny, you have watched over us from generation to generation. May our lawmakers trust your faithfulness during this challenging season of our nations history. Lord, inspire them to recall how you have sustained the land we love in prosperity and adversity, in peace and in war. Give our senators the wisdom to believe that they can trust your constancy and greatness, as they cling to your promise never to leave or forsake them. Believing in your power, help us all to face fresh challenges with total confidence in you. And lord, we pray for the health and safety of all as communities begin the process of reopening businesses. We pray in your mighty name. Amen. The president pro tempore please join me in the pledge of allegiance to the flag. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of america, and to the republic for which it
Environment that will support a full economic recovery. I yield the floor. In march, our country lost a great statesman and my fellow squealer, former senator tom coburn of oklahoma. A family physician who delivered more than 4,000 babies, he was known as dr. Tom in oklahoma. But in washington, he was called dr. No because of his fierce opposition to adding more red ink to the National Debt. Having served just 10 years in the senate before retiring in 2014, the year i was elected, i never had the honor to serve alongside dr. Coburn. Nonetheless, his leadership and his efforts to eliminate government waste and overreach continues to be an inspiration to me and to many others. If you cannot find waste in any part of the federal budget, he once commented, it can only be for one reason, you havent looked. Many of the outlandish examples he exposed are now what i like to call legendary. Take, for example, the shrimp on a treadmill, and of course, there was the bridge to nowhere. Every feder
Government doing those things. Among those many protections can be found provisions of the bill of rights, including the Fourth Amendment to the United States constitution. A Fourth Amendment reminds us, its our right, our fundamental inalienable rights to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures and any warrants have to be backed by probable cause and any probable causebased warrant has to include with particul particularity, a description of the places and persons to be searched and to be seized. This is a tradition that reaches not just back a couple of centuries, it reaches back much farther than that. It has its origins not only in our own country, but in our mother country, in the united kingdom. By the time john wilks was serving in parliament in the 1760s, there had been a long established tradition and understanding in fact, a series of laws ena enacted to make sure that warrants were not abused and to make sure that the rights of english subjects would not be infringed
Persistent challenge of china not playing by the rules. In the case of coronavirus, that was about china not telling the World Health Organization, not telling other countries, not telling their own people what was happening in terms of the coronavirus, not taking steps to stop International Travel early on. That wasnt playing by the who rules, the World Health Organization rules and the result has been devastation. Its been the spread of the virus and so much of that devastation weve seen around the globe in my view could have been avoided. Had they played by the rules. Unfortunately, not playing by the rules applies to china in many other areas, too. Weve talked about trade a lot on this floor of the senate to be sure theres a level Playing Field between china and the United States and making sure they play by the International Trading rules, but here is another one, where china and the Chinese Communist party has not played by the rules. And thats with regard to obtaining our intell
