LaSalle Grill partners with Temper Grille chef Sean Kelley for popup Tuesday events

It had been two and a half months since Sean Kelley had worked in a kitchen. The former Temper Grille owner and chef was feeling beaten down from a busy night and from months of hearing from angry customers who spewed hateful comments about his decision to close Temper last December. Near the end of dinner service, he stepped out of the kitchen and on his way back, diners started to stand and clap. Kelley got a standing ovation. “I met a lot of people over 10 years, a lot of friends,” he said Wednesday. “The people that were here last night were showing some love, and that was awesome.”

Smokin Fattys BBQ Joint opens in Elkhart A lot of passion out there for barbecue

Four minutes before 4 p.m. on the second day since opening, a queue started to form at Smokin’ Fattys BBQ Joint in Elkhart. Customers were ready the minute the restaurant opened for the day. “There’s been a lot of buildup in the people in the community about when are we going to open,” said owner Cam Snyder. “I’m grateful. I’ve got some big shoes to fill with all the interest, and there’s a lot of passion out there for barbecue.” Smokin’ Fattys BBQ Joint at 3241 Interchange Drive, a barbecue restaurant with a Mexican flair, opened for business last Tuesday. Initially slated to open last September, the former Applebee’s building has kept its familiar layout, but with added touches of classic rock and roll and its mantra of “Peace. Love. BBQ” resonating throughout the space.

Temper Grille in Mishawaka to close for good, as owner points to COVID restrictions

MISHAWAKA — Just before COVID-19 struck in March, it looked like Temper Grille was going to have a record year, chef and owner Sean Kelley said Saturday of the black-tablecloth restaurant and bar that he started 10 years ago, serving unique “American tapas.” But, on Friday, Kelley announced that Temper Grille will close permanently after its last meal on Dec. 18, blaming the pandemic and restrictions. He’d only been able to do in-house dining for a few months this year, at just 50% capacity, he said. More than six months had been spent doing carryout only, including after an employee was infected with COVID-19 this fall.
