New York's Unemployment Claims System Still Doesn't Work

New York’s Unemployment Claims System Still Doesn’t Work Thousands of state residents needed to reapply for unemployment benefits after their one-year mark, once again overwhelming the state’s system, leaving claimants without answers or benefits. Michelle Breidenbach, syracuse.com   |   April 5, 2021   |  News (TNS) New York’s website to sign up for unemployment benefits still doesn’t work. One year after hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers jammed the state’s system with new claims, the state continues to leave people stranded without benefits for weeks and months. There’s a new pileup as people reach the one-year anniversary of the coronavirus shutdown that put them out of work last March. The state requires some people to reapply, but not others. They mostly have to sort it out for themselves. It’s confusing.

Here’s how to apply for weekly benefit. Mike Groll EFE Since March 2020, New York State has distributed over $62 billion in unemployment benefits to 4 million New Yorkers. This amounts to more than would typically be given out in 29 years. This figure includes over $1 billion paid during the week of January 4, 2021 to New Yorkers through newly-extended federal unemployment programs. False Claims: Unemployment ID theft

Created: February 08, 2021 06:00 PM ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)  Has someone been collecting unemployment benefits in your name? You might think it’s an odd question but thousands of people in our region are finding out the hard way they’ve been the victim of identity theft and now, at tax time, they’re stuck cleaning up the mess.   At the start of the pandemic when the economy was shut down, unemployment claims were coming in fast and furious. New York State’s unemployment website was constantly crashing, the phone lines were crushed and those in need were made to wait weeks if not months for the benefits they were entitled to.
