Lockdown effect: Tipplers go for panic buying; liquor shops rake in moolah
Wine shops in the city exhausted all of their stocks on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Hyderabad: Soon after the Telangana government announced a 10-day lockdown, starting Wednesday, tipplers indulged in panic buying across the city and liquor shops registered record sales, sources said.
Market watches said that alcohol worth around Rs 25 crore was sold between 6 am- 10 am on Wednesday morning, before lockdown came into force, in Hyderabad limits alone. Across the state, over Rs 125.41 crore alcohol sales took place during the same time.
Telangana liquor shops registered record sales on Tuesday following the announcement of lockdown from Wednesday. A total of Rs 125.41 crore worth liquor, including beer, was sold in just four hours on Tuesday. The sales were in normal volume during the morning, but after the lockdown decision was taken by Telangana CM KCR, consumers started rushing to liquor shops to stock up.

The Telangana government announced a lockdown for ten days on Tuesday. The lockdown will be relaxed from 6 am to 10 am daily for all the activities. On Tuesday, scores of tipplers thronged liquor shops and serpentine queues were witnessed outside the wine shops.
The liquor shops at Lakdikapool, Narayanaguda, Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Chaitanyapuri, Hayathnagar, etc., were overcrowded. The officials of the Excise department are saying that they can t open liquor shops before 10 am in the state according to their rules.
The Association of Liquor and Beer Suppliers urged the Telangana government to look into the possibility of wine shop owners charging a nominal fee to supply liquor at customers doorstep during the lockdown.

It was most unexpected tsunami that the 460 odd wine shops in Greater Hyderabad was hit in recent times. But it also brought in a windfall of nothing short of ₹20-crore in flat six hours on Tuesday.
Minutes after the lockdown announcement, a section of the people devoted all their energies to buy their choicest liquor. From 3 pm till 8 pm on Tuesday it was mad rush at the liquor outlets. On Wednesday, too people could be seen waiting from 6 am onwards for the wine stores to open.
