This March, as the world marked one full year of the pandemic, my mother and stepfather celebrated their second go at a first wedding anniversary, 25 years after they divorced.
I was 13 when they split. If you’d asked me then if I wished my mother, Fawn Waterfield, and my second stepfather, Chilton Allen Bowman III (C.A. to those who know him), would reunite, I’d have said no way. My father had long been out of the picture, and my first stepfather had moved to Sitka, Alaska, with our baby brother, Camden Buzard, leaving my little sister and me in nearby Juneau. I just wanted Mom to myself.
Bridging the American divide: A search for civic responsibility Jan 26, 2021
Most of us knew the left-right divide was widening in America.
But did any of us think the extreme divisiveness would lead to the sacking of the United States Capitol, for the first time since the War of 1812, by a band of self-described patriots, otherwise known as domestic terrorists, bent on preventing the certification of a presidential election?
The answer is Yes â some of us did imagine that possibility, but not many. If we had imagined that outcome- â if we had discussed it among ourselves and over the divide â could we have prevented the tragic assault? Thatâs one question. A pertinent follow-up is, what now? What must we do to have that conversation, and prevent more tragedies?
