owned airplane. this is a jetliner that trave e traverses the globe, redundant seasons on boa systems on board. talk about the technology transmitting information. there s ways airliners stay in information with the ground, a traffic controllers, with their own headquarters. you have first of all just a pilot can call the controller, call headquarters and say here i am. this is what s going on. a may day for example. that s active communication. then you have radar. commercial flights have secondary radar. radar station beams the signal to the airplane. the airplane sends back a signal saying here i am. here s my identifier. i m in the system. then you have a new technology called adsb.
we just lost her unfortuna unfortunately. that s the part we want to hear. what people on the ground are told. we know there s passengers, relatives far away it watching hear. the people on the ground feel they re not being told enough. they want more information. got to be very, very, very frustrating. we re going to take a short break. ahead this hour, obviouslile ahead of actual facts there are wild theories spreading online about what may have actually happened. they re spreading because there s no real information about what actually happened. we re going to look at some theories and try to fwigure out if these are even plausible. and figure out if they re hurting the investigation at the same time. good point. macaroni & cheese from stouffer s starts with freshly-made pasta, and 100% real cheddar cheese. but what makes stouffer s mac n cheese best of all. that moment you enjoy it at home. stouffer s. made with care for you or your family.
or five hours it suggests hijacking to me. somebody that knew what they were doing turned off the transponder, continued the plane onto somewhere else. i ve seen speculation it was hijacked and going to be used for some undetermined purposes. so i think if this report is is right, it s a key piece of information. would somebody take a plane like this and turn it into a weapon? we saw that in 9/11. what you can do with one of the airplanes is follow another into a metropolitan area. it will come up as a radar blip. that s sheer speculation. i offer that for what it s worth. interesting with that speculation, it makes you wonder we ve been sitting here talking about the threat of terrorism, the possible link to terrorism. i was talking to john before the show. do you think here in the united states we re more concerned and
of course we ve seen a spectrum of emotions. there s sadness, people who are hoping for miracles. then of course there s a deep frustration with the lack of information and knowledge coming out. john? you know, i was thinking about that passenger we heard from, the wife of the passenger, danica. talking about the fact they re being told nothing. i m curious if the airline is doing anything for these people, giving them any help in trying to answer the questions from their children, from the younger people, from older people. what is being done there? reporter: michaela, so far what malaysia airlines has done is flown the people who are related to those on board or friends, family to where they want to be whether beijing or kuala lumpur, the points of departure and points of arrival for those on board.
started. that is that there was some kind of catastrophe that took place that quickly and abruptly shut all systems down that would communicate with the ground and give us better information. captain, i want to question you on that point. that really is the nub of the issue at the minute. you have have this all right, good night on the hand over from the air space to vietnamese which is normal. then you have the loss of information. that puts the search area once again, doesn t it, back to the south china sea/gulf of thailand? yes, it does. it definitely does. we go back to square one. we don t have anything else to work with. we need to have some point of departure. that s been difficult. the question is, are we at square one at this point? again, day six. thank you so much for being with us. we want to look at other
