Secretary, id like to make some opening remarks, if thats all right, before we get into minutes, i wanted to just thank everyone for being here today, and i just feel that i need to open up this meeting with an acknowledgment of the tragic events that occurred at west portal station over the weekend. Im imagining, but i dont know. But im imagining that many people are feeling anger, rage, a sense of powerlessness, hopelessness. I know that ive cycled through these feelings myself over the past 72 hours, and this happens whenever i hear of any fatalities or serious injuries on our streets. It shouldnt happen in our city or anywhere, and our hearts are with the family. I also know that when these kinds of things happen, there is a natural tendency to want to make sense of the situation very quickly by finding a villain to blame, pointing a finger and demanding action and i understand that. The chp says this started around 3 00 this morning on highway 101 when officers spotted the car going 80 in a 55 zone. They say they tried to pull the driver over, but the driver took off in an Industrial Park area and flynned around and went in this neighborhood, going around 60, 65 miles an hour. When he tried to make a turn, didnt make it and crashed into the home waking up the family inside. We were all asleep, you know. We heard that noise and the alarm went out and then we have to wake up we wake up and come out. This is what happened. Reporter when we got on scene, the driver of the vehicle was already in the back of the police car. But the passenger was being released and agreed to talk to us. He said they were headed to his house and said this when i asked where they were coming from whereabouts of marin county and essentially, its like, you know, one minute youre doing good and the next thing

But the idea that were sitting around having a discussion about personnel, inhibiting the care that veterans deserve really does not bode well for the reflection that we want in this country. People who served this nation, we should be bending over backwards to make sure that the benefits and the care and the services that they frankly earned is something that is given the highest priority and something the president remains highly committed to.
