Security officials foiled an attack on a police base in eastern Nigeria on Thursday killing 11 of the attackers, an official has said.
The spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Mohammed Yerima, said the attack was by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN); the armed wing of the outlawed separatist group, IPOB.
Security agencies had blamed the group, which wants an independent country for Igbos, for previous attacks on security officials and facilities but IPOB has denied being responsible for the attacks.
Dozens of security officials have been killed in the South-east and South-south regions of Nigeria in recent attacks on security officials and facilities.
“A gang of IPOB/ESN terrorists mounted in vehicles on Thursday, 6 May 2021, stormed Orlu town with the intention to attack the compound housing the area command and police station in Orlu LGA of Imo State.

“The assailants, who have been on the radar of the Joint Technical Intelligence Team were said to have come from a forest camp in Ideato North LGA of Imo State from where they mobilised and planned the failed attack,” the statement read.
