Both McLaughlin and Muhammad have been steadily breaking records over the past two years, with McLaughlin breaking the world record at the 2019 U.S. Nationals followed by the Doha championships. At the Olympic trials, she became the first woman to finish the race in less than 52 seconds.
“I can’t really get it [the world record] straight in my head yet. I’m sure I’ll process it and celebrate later. I am absolutely delighted. What a great race,” McLaughlin said after the game.

Dalilah Muhammad, the Rio 2016 Olympic champion, took silver with a time of 51.58, while Femke Bol of the Netherlands bagged the bronze.
There was some confusion as to why Cockrell was disqualified from the race as there was no formal announcement and there didn t appear to be a clear violation.
