GC32 Lagos Cup 1 - Overall: Alinghi victorious, Red Bull second despite dramatic capsize by GC32 Racing Tour 5 Jul 01:50 BST 30 June - 4 July 2021
Alinghi has won the GC32 Lagos Cup 1 after a dominant final day in strong breeze and dramatic conditions. With the wind gusting close to 25 knots and sometimes arriving with little warning, Red Bull Sailing Team was caught out and nosedived alarmingly, resulting in a capsize.
End of Race 16 for Roman Hagara and the Austrian crew. But could they get the boat upright and ready for the final two heats? Yes, they could, and not only that but scored a 3rd and 2nd in the last two races of Lagos, enough for Austria to hold on to second place overall by just three points from Team Rockwool Racing from Denmark.
GC32 Lagos Cup 1 - Day 3: Tight battle for the podium while Alinghi continue to shine by GC32 Racing Tour 4 Jul 05:35 BST 30 June - 4 July 2021
The six teams couldn t ask for more of the conditions than they experienced on the penultimate day of the GC32 Lagos Cup 1. Sunny skies, flat water, moderate breeze but very shifty, meaning you could never relax for a moment. Even Alinghi struggled early on with an out-of-character 5th place in the opening heat of five races this afternoon. But the Swiss regrouped and soon rediscovered their mojo to take the last three winner s guns of the day, moving further ahead of Red Bull Sailing Team in second place overall.
GC32 Lagos Cup 1 - Day 2: Breeze On for the Foilers of Lagos by GC32 Racing Tour 3 Jul 05:30 BST 30 June - 4 July 2021
Five races in an ever-increasing breeze resulted in a second day of the GC32 Lagos Cup 1 that will linger long in the memory. The scores see-sawed back and forth between the six crews and just 2 points separate the middle order of Team Rockwool Racing, Black Star Sailing Team and Zoulou.
After winning the final race of day one, Red Bull Sailing Team was fast out of the blocks this afternoon, the Austrians winning the opening race ahead of series leader Alinghi. The Swiss bounced back with a race win in the next, and this time it was the new crew from Denmark that were the closest threat to Alinghi, Nicolai Sehested steering Team Rockwool Racing to second across the line ahead of the double Olympic Champion Roman Hagara and Red Bull.
