United Way of Lamar County 5K raises $4 3K

RENO — Participants at the fourth annual Live United 5K Run/Walk faced an uphill trek followed by a brisk headwind Saturday morning as they made their way around the Pine Ridge Golf Course in Reno. “We had a great showing today with over 50 runners and walkers,” said Jenny Wilson, director of the United Way of Lamar County. “I would say the majority are walking, so never be afraid to come out.” Wilson estimates more than $4,300 will be added to United Way coffers as a result of the roughly 3.1-mile event. Paris High School junior Adam Hartman took the first place medal in men’s competition with a time of 20.45 followed by Prairiland High School senior Edwardo Banda with a time of 21.19 for second place and Osvaldo (Chato) Viveros with 22.36 for third.

When Taylor Sandoval returned to Paris in 2016 after working in an equine therapy center in San Diego, California, her mom and stepdad had land and at least one horse appropriate for therapeutic riding. She now has six therapeutic horses, and Tailored Rides Equine Assisted Therapy, a nonprofit corporation, as an extension of Weybap Farm, located north of Reno and the Cowboy Church in the Camp on CR 42520. Situated on 8 acres with a 60-foot round pen and large lighted sand arena, the property has various gardens, a sensory trail for riding and walking, and a large flock of chickens and guineas.

Giving Day support: Donors gift more than $2 7M to area nonprofits; $44 9K to Lamar agencies

On the annual East Texas Giving Day event, donors gifted more than $2.7 million to area nonprofits, with Lamar County seeing part of the helping hand. “I am encouraged and humbled by the way this community serves one another and shows up for one another, and it was very obvious with the way PJC was supported during giving day,” said Baleigh McCoin, Paris Junior College Director of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs. “A big, sincere thank you to everyone who donated.” Seven Lamar organizations participated and raised $44,918 for local foundations through 156 donations on Tuesday, many with matching funds. The organizations were PJC Memorial Foundation, Northeast Texas Trail Coalition, CitySquare Paris, St. Joseph’s Community Foundation, United Way of Lamar County, Tailored Rides Equine Assisted Therapy Inc and the The Wesley Center at PJC.
