Travelers to Douglas County spent $82.7 million in director visitor spending and $124.4 million in total business sales in 2020, a 22% decline from 2019, according to the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. The findings are part of a study conducted by Tourism Economics.

But Douglas County tourism officials look toward the future excited for a comeback. “A lot of other areas are experiencing tourism impacts of much more than that,” said Taylor Pedersen, President and CEO of Travel Superior. “So we’re excited that we’re starting to see tourism come back.”

This is a free, family-friendly event on Barker s Island in Superior. Organizers say the festival will follow the CDC and Douglas County Health Department guidelines for every event held during the festival weekend.   The public will be encouraged to wear masks and follow social distance guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Superior Mayor Jim Paine said in a Lake Superior Ice Festival press release, that the city has had good luck with outdoor events.
