sandra: members of the conservative house freedom conference nearly derailing last night s vote to conference effectively holding the vote hostage until they were promised a bigger role in crafting the gop s spending strategy in the form of negotiators. republican senator john barrasso is joining us. chairman of the policy committee. thank you for joining us this morning. things took a dramatic turn on the house floor last night. was anybody expecting this or did anybody see this coming? thanks for having me, sandra. beyond that there is agreement. we need to do tax reform, tax relief, tax reductions. we re unified on that and we all believe in lower spending, fewer regulations. so i m with the freedom caucus in what their concerns are about how much money the government spends and wastes. we need to get tax reform done, get it to the president s desk
president wants to do well form reform, a border wall. basically once you get tax reform done, if they have that, republicans will feel like they don t have to do anything else going into 2018? the environment will still be challenging for republicans whether tax reform pass or not. you have a very energized democratic base that s gonna show up no matter what. republicans can at least point to tax reform to say, hey, we got this done. big issue for republican voters. especially on the upscale wing of the republican voters. this is something that s going to help excite republican turnout. it s not going to imaginically make this much easier for republicans. dana: you re saying we have to stay tuned. a day in the life time in politics, we know every day brings us a new thing. we have a year to go until midterms. dana: it will feel like seven. josh, thank you so much for being here. thanks, dana.
president trump as jennifer griffin suggested may have thrown a slight monkey wrench on saturday morning, he suggested instead of cutting corporate tax rate to 35 to 20%, he might accept cutting to 22%. a lot of hard-line conservatives in the house say that is not acceptable, they want it down to 20%, they want it to 10%, is that idea of 22% corporate tax rate, is that on the table now? we have 20% in both the house and the senate, that s the number that i would like to see, president trump came to our policy lunch on tuesday, i thought did a wonderful explaining how important this is, once we get tax reform done, he is ready to sign tax relief for the american people, the tax reductions and tax cut that is people are desperately looking for to get the economy growing even faster, he said we can go onto additional things. all the important things. chris: to answer my question, is 22% acceptable or not?
