joining us again is susanne craig, investigative reporter at the new york times. thank you again for sticking with us. you say just a couple of paragraphs into this big piece tonight, quote, according to tax experts, it is unlikely that mr. trump would be vulnerable to criminal prosecution for helping his parents evade taxes because the acts happened too long ago and are past the statute of limitations. there is no time limit, however, on civil fines for tax fraud. i m not a tax law expert and i don t necessarily understand how law enforcement works around tax measures like this. is the president potentially facing legal jeopardy over some of the things that you have reported out with your colleagues? i think new york state could come in and look at some of this. they already announced tonight they re going to do a review of it. one of the interesting things we found on, and you talkeded earlier about all county and this scheme that they had going to drain their father s estate of
reelection? i would win reelection. i m at the end of my term as chairman of this committee and there is so much work to be done on the foreign affairs front especially now with north korea and iran. bill: understand serious matters. there are 31 republican colleagues, 32 if you count yourself who won t seek reelection. how difficult do you believe it will be next november to hold the majority? what i m looking at is the strength of the economy, the reforms we re putting into place and the administration has put into place in terms of the economic growth that that s leading to, the tax measures and the impact we re seeing now in terms of the gdp growth in the country, the new jobs being created. from what i see, i think this economy is going to get stronger and stronger and i think the result is going to be a good one for house republicans. i know the old adage about a president s party in power in mid-term elections often loses seats but i see so much
about a lot of companies across many sectors saying, here s a bonus, we re gonna hire more people, we re gonna invest in our company. that seems to run counter to what marco rubio and democrats say. sure. that s why you say a lot of democrats still pushing on this bill. they re not going to let this debate just end. democrats are saying, a, these are temporary moves and, b, wait for the long run, see what your pay check look likes. these tax measures do expire. again, this will be a battle that s not over at all. it s going to keep going for awhile. ed: after the republican failure on repeal and replace of oba obamacare, earlier last year, there was talk, president has to get something done. now that he has gotten it done, what do you think he may need to get done to show, yes, in attention to the tax cut, republicans can cover, is it immigration, infrastructure? that is the big question on his plate. he ll be meeting with
he overreached with his executive power? i think donald trump has as much authority to say no as barack obama had to say yes, at least. and i think it s not going to hurt our relationship with the australians. they are our blood brothers. i mean that literally back through many battles. they remind us that they ve been in every war the united states was in, and sometimes they got there first. we have a great relationship with australia. i don t think this will tarnish it. let s talk a little more about the immigration policy and the wall. we just played a little gave our viewers a poll that said that 60% of americans don t think the wall should be built. i know it s something donald trump campaigned on. my question to you, though, if he ends up strengthening or raising the price on visas or using other tax measures to get mexico to indirectly pay for the wall, and then mexico passes on that to american consumers, are you still in favor of it? i m in favor of building the
withholding tables in the way you described because a deal is forthcoming and doesn t make sense to reprogram that massive computer system to extend the tax cuts for the they ll wait until they have a definitive solution here? correct. okay. some other shorter term implications. doctors with medicare patients see payments drop in february and the irs commissioner warning if there s no extension for the amt patch there, 80 million to 100 million people could face problems doing their taxes. right. so first of all, what s called the dock fix, the fact is that if this measure is not corrected quickly, part of the fiscal cliff, doctors who serve medicare patients will see their payments go down something like 27%. i mean, this is one of those crazy time bombs that s in the tax code. that s patched every year. same thing with the amt. as i just mentioned, while the other tax measures, taxpayers
