mimts. you look at this tax cut proposal, of course it s debt finance. it adds a trillion and a half dollars to the national debt, something that all these members have did he cried over recent years. it hurts middle class folks. for example, if you have to deduct medical expenses or deduct your student loan interest, your taxes are going up on this. so it s just a small bore proposal. and i think that s borne out of years and years and years of degradation and really the collapse of the intellectual support structures around the republican party and the conservative movement. in the early 1980s daniel patrick moin han talked about the how the republican party had become the party of ideas. and we have moved 180 degrees from that on the compass to its a party on a policy level that s just it s mostly nonsense. and this proposal would fall deeply and neatly into that category. you wrote an op ed today that both major parties are stuck in crisis.
that s what i ve always stood for, a choice or a general. i ve never run without a primary and never endorsed by the republicans in a primary so here i am as a member of congress, believe it or not, in that situation. i think establishment looks bad seeing nothing s change and i think especially in my region of new york we just keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting things to change and it doesn t an and people are tired of the same old story and looking for something new. let s ask you about new york specifically because in the president s tax cut proposal right now, endorsed by congressional leadership it would do away with tax deductions for state taxes, local taxes and property taxes and you know these are huge deductions from the residents of your district in new york state here. could you vote for a plan that includes the elimination of these deductions? no, the problem with the so-called state and local tax duh duction is that it typically
trump states. you know, 15 attorneys general are already suing him. they ll ask for an injunction. we have a long way to go. i think there is more sort of reality television on the part of the president. jonathan, donald trump is looking the biggest part of his tax cut proposal is a tax cut for businesses. and he made the argument as did gary cohn, that in giving tax cuts to businesses they ll somehow turn around and give that to their workers as a bonus. that never actually happens. but this is the guy who is saying we are not interested in corporate welfare. every other part of the agenda seems to be very interested in giving as much benefit to corporations as he can, but not this time. he draws the line at health insurance companies. right. and, again, ali, if you are asking me why is he doing that, i have no idea. i just come back to the grand plan of trying to keep a promise that the republicans have always
a good idea. the one who did think it was a good idea don t know anything about health care. who knows where this will go. 68% of republicans actually think trump should not be repealing this. this is fascinating. i think it s a big liability for him because, as you pointed out, nine out of the ten states which are hurt the most by this are trump states. you know, 15 attorneys general are already suing him. they ll ask for an injunction. we have a long way to go. i think there is more sort of reality television on the part of the president. jonathan, donald trump is looking the biggest part of his tax cut proposal is a tax cut for businesses. and he made the argument as did gary cohn, that in giving tax cuts to businesses they ll somehow turn around and give that to their workers as a bonus. that never actually happens. but this is the guy who is saying we are not interested in
that first of all, none of this may happen. trump has no idea what he is doing. his advisers didn t think it was a good idea. the one who did think it was a good idea don t know anything about health care. who knows where this will go. 68% of republicans actually think trump should not be repealing this. this is fascinating. i think it s a big liability for him because, as you pointed out, nine out of the ten states which are hurt the most by this are trump states. you know, 15 attorneys general are already suing him. they ll ask for an injunction. we have a long way to go. i think there is more sort of reality television on the part of the president. jonathan, donald trump is looking the biggest part of his tax cut proposal is a tax cut for businesses. and he made the argument as did gary cohn, that in giving tax cuts to businesses they ll
