YouthDance Education Trust
(YET) will be celebrating 21 years with their annual
International Dance Day (IDD) event at Te Papa in
May.
On May 2 Te Papa will be buzzing with dance
activity to commemorate UNESCO’s International Dance Day,
which aims to bring communities together through the common
language of dance. For the past 21 years YET have been
curating a diverse programme of free dance workshops and
performances for the Wellington community to engage with and
participate in.
From 10.20am to 4pm the public are
welcome to come and experience dance from all around the
Festival goers were treated to Pacific music and dance, arts and crafts and delicious island cuisine.
But it is much more than just a festival to the people involved, such as the president of the Wellington Solomon Islands community Glorious Oxenham or Aunty Glo , as she is more commonly known. We ve been doing this for 10 years. The very first year we just came down to have a look and they said where is your stall? So the following year we combined with Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji and we called ourselves the flags of Melanesia.
Glorious Oxenham left performing with the Solomon Islands community at the Wellington Pasifika Festival. 23 January 2021
