The lake and classical temples in Stourhead’s landscape garden are justly famous, but it’s definitely worth exploring the ancient woods to see thousands of bluebells dancing in the dappled shade.
Swan and Cygnet Woods, Essex
The ancient site of Swan Wood sits alongside its smaller, more recently planted neighbour, Cygnet Wood. Swan Wood, a mix of broadleaved trees, including sweet chestnut and hornbeam coppice home to woodland birds such as hawfinches, is awash with bluebells and wood sorrels at this time of year. A stream runs through it, with alder trees along its banks.
