The uptick was fuelled by a significant spike in Perak which recorded 1,215 new cases. This was the first time Perak recorded four-digit new cases in a day during the third wave of the pandemic. The previous record was 245 new cases on Jan 21. Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in a statement, said the spike was due to the Jalan Changkat Jong cluster which comprised 86.1 percent of the new cases in Perak today.

PUTRAJAYA (Jan 6): Malaysia today recorded 13 new clusters, the highest number in a day so far, with 10 of these involving workplaces in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Sabah, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. He said the 10 clusters were the Dataran Utas, Casa Permai, Firma, Persiaran Teknologi, Bersepadu, Jalan Padu, Kampung Pitas, Ikan Emas, Kayuh and Jalan Seputeh. The clusters were identified through targeted screening at workplaces as well as screening of symptomatic individuals and close contacts, he said. “Dataran Utas Cluster involves Petaling district, Selangor with 66 COVID-19 positive cases detected today following targeted screening at a company.

Selangor logged the largest number of new cases followed by Johor and Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan and Kedah all logged more than 40 new cases.  In Selangor, more than half the cases appear to be from the existing Seri Lanang cluster which had 509 cases alone but is limited to the Kapar district. Another 85 cases were from the Teratai cluster. Both originated from workplaces.
