BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, S.C. Batesburg-Leesville council members believe jobs and community engagement could put a stop to gun violence in their community.
Members met at their scheduled council meeting to discuss a proposal which they believe could help curb gun violence.
The idea to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into local technical colleges to provide training and education to help get people jobs.

COLUMBIA, S.C. In 2020, South Carolina set an all-time record for murders.
According to police, the Palmetto State saw a huge increase in violent crime last year. 2021 is on track to be even deadlier.
“We’re seeing an unprecedented level of violent crime, Deputy Chief Stan Smith with the Richland County Sheriff s Department said. Our murder numbers, if we keep on track, will be substantially greater than they’ve ever been, which is alarming to us.”

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. Another arrest has been made in the shooting death of an 11-year-old girl in Batesburg-Leesville.
The shooting, which happened earlier this month, killed Tasha Jay, 11 while she played with a friend in her room. Her friend was injured in the shooting.
DeCarlos Terrell Chatman, 36, is charged with unlawfully possessing a handgun because he has been convicted of a crime of violence, according to an arrest warrant. Chatman, a Batesburg-Leesville resident, turned himself in Saturday.
