Estonia might lose €340 million EU funding if oil plant project goes ahead

Court temporarily suspends new oil shale plant building permit

A building permit which would allow state-owned energy group Eesti Energia to build a new shale oil plant in Ida-Viru County has been suspended by a court, following an appeal launched by an environmental group. Eesti Energia spokesperson Priit Luts said that since work has not begun on the proposed plant, the ruling, made by the second-tier Tartu Circuit Court Friday, had no immediate effect. Since work on the construction of the new oil plant has not yet begun, the implementation of interim legal protection has no direct impact, Luts said. The planned plant would be built in Narva-Jõesuu municipality.

Man released from Tartu Prison after 38 years behind bars

A man who had been imprisoned in Estonia for 38 years has finally been released. Oleg Pjatnitski, now 61, was originally apprehended for the relatively minor crime of theft, but this soon snowballed as he added murder and other serious crimes to the list, ultimately ending up on death row. While the death penalty was commuted – the death penalty abolished in Estonia in the 1990s – Pjatnitski, as with many others who had escaped the executioner in a similar way – remained in jail. He was released from Tartu prison on Friday, following a judgment last month which overruled a lower-tier court s decision to continue to keep him behind bars.
