(Pilar Olivares/Reuters) Inside a COVID-19 unit in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, Dr. Tarsila Vieceli said she is seeing first hand the collapse of the country s health-care system under the weight of the coronavirus pandemic.  Heart attack and car accident victims, she said, aren t guaranteed an ICU bed and surgeries are being cancelled. There s a waiting list for ICU beds that are filled with COVID-19 patients that, unlike early in the pandemic, are younger and have no underlying medical conditions.

Brazil s health system has collapsed with Covid

BBC News Brazil s health system has collapsed with Covid Close Tarsila Vieceli, a coronavirus intensive care unit doctor at one hospital told BBC World News the health system had collapsed. She said: We have been working at full capacity for quite some time right now. it has been a long time since we have attended patients with anything other than Covid in intensive care units and everyone is exhausted right now. We are exhausted because we haven t seen our families for such a long time. I haven t seen my relatives for the past 15 months. We are not hopeful that anything can change in the following weeks.
