The Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Uttarakhand on August 13 and 14 due to the expected heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could reach extremely heavy levels. The heavy rainfall has caused waterlogging and flooding, disrupting normal life in many districts of the state. The recent landslide at Tarsali buried a car with five pilgrims traveling to Kedarnath, killing them. Officials said that about 60 meters of the Guptkashi-Gaurikund highway leading to Kedarnath Dham has been badly damaged and washed away.
