Commonwealth's Attorney not prosecuting any city credit card spending

Photo: WINA CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Saying there’s nothing in Charlottesville’s credit card spending policy that can be enforced, Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania in a letter to City Manager Chip Boyles writes there will be no criminal prosecution of Mayor Nikuyah Walker’s use of a city credit card. Platania writes that he addressed this issue two years ago with city leaders that credit card spending policy is vague, and oversight is inconsistent. This was after prosecuting former city chief of staff and clerk of council in 2019 for failure to return an Apple Watch and IPhone purchased with city funds.

All this as the city grapples with the need to address an affordable housing crisis, recent gun violence, and more.

Charlottesville City Council holds another emergency meeting Charlottesville City Council holds another emergency meeting By Andrew Webb | January 11, 2021 at 5:30 PM EST - Updated January 11 at 5:56 PM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville City Council held another emergency closed meeting Monday, January 11, to discuss the holes in leadership. Councilors had previously held an emergency meeting Friday, Jan. 8. Charlottesville is still on the search for its next City Manager following the resignation of Tarron Richardson. Richardson resigned at the end of September without a specific reason. Councilor Michael Payne says the city is in a leadership crisis, and councilors need to develop a plan with next steps and communicate that with the public. Payne also says that public discourse will be a must in the coming months.
