they still call it typhoon. no longer a super typhoon because it s not above 150 anymore, it s 145, like we ll split hairs at 145. making landfall somewhere close to danang. can you explain where you are and what you have been seeing and hearing? reporter: yeah, we re on the island on the central islands of the philippines. we re here because of the earthquake that came through about three weeks ago. so people were severely damaged over 34,000 homes destroyed as the typhoon came through, most of those people were living in temporary shelters or under tarpaulins. we had them moving into whatever hard shelters did exist. this island got massive amounts

victims of 9/11 the wait has been long enough. after nearly ten years on the run the mastermind behind one of the most fiendish acts of terrorism is finally dead. and we re still learning new details and no doubt will be for weeks. cnn s nick paton walsh is in the city where bin laden was killed at that compound. he joins us live now from abbottabad, pakistan. nick, you re seeing the compound really for the first time today. how does it look? i mean, how does it fit into the neighborhood? reporter: well, i think certainly it s fair to say that it s set away from the main road. apparently now surrounded by police and military tarpaulins concealing quite a bit of its main architecture. it s behind these trees actually behind me over here, some distance in fact. i mean, yes, really many of the houses here do have tall walls around them. i think it does sound like this particular compound would have
neighborhood? reporter: well, i think certainly it s fair to say that it s set away from the main road. apparently now surrounded by police and military tarpaulins concealing quite a bit of its main architecture. it s behind these trees actually behind me over here, some distance in fact. i mean, yes, really many of the houses here do have tall walls around them. i think it does sound like this particular compound would have been far away from everything else. so it would have attracted some attention in terms of the size of its walls, in terms of the extent of protection being put there. but in terms of the trash being burned in the compound and the fact it was being constructed, many of the houses here are in mi mid-construction and also burn their trash. it s possible may not have thought much of it. and given the fact it was set back from the main roads here it may not have caught that many people s attention.
they have basically no food, no water that they are getting from the international community. what they are getting they are getting from the people of misrata, and they are right in the middle of the combat zone. they gave us this piece of shrapnel they say artillery shells fell right near the area where the refugees are. ibrahim prince mohammed from ghana says he and many others have been staying under the tarpaulins for more than a month and feel abandoned by their governments. want to go to ghana simply because we hear the gunshot and shouting all over the city. people are dying. people are dying. we are not comfortable. we want to leave, so we need help from u.n. reporter: cries for help have so far gone unheard as the situation of those caught here gets worse every day.
