A NYPD detective pledged cops would staff a two-day wake in September 2021 for a man killed in gang violence, said a lawsuit by relatives of LaShaun Whitfield. But no cops showed the second day of the wake when a shooter or shooters in an SUV carrying four men opened fire on the mourners, mortally wounding Whitfield. The NYPD had a duty to provide protection at the wake, the lawsuit says.
