It’s strange how some pieces of advice stick more than others. It might be because the advice arrived at a turning point in our careers or was relevant to a workplace dilemma we faced at the time, or perhaps it was delivered by someone who we really admire.
Having last week revealed the six winners of this year’s BOSS Young Executives awards, we asked each of them to nominate the advice that stuck.
1. Be grateful for the people around you
Ellen MacDougal, chief operating officer of life insurance broker Steadfast Life, says the most important piece of advice came from her father. It was to recognise all the people around you who support you in some way.

If you had asked Tara Osborne at the age of six what she wanted to do when she grew up, she would have replied promptly: “Investment banker.”
Osborne was always being told she was good at maths and good with money and was going to become an investment banker.
“I had it in my head that that’s exactly what I wanted to do,” says Osborne, now general manager of strategy and investor relations at waste group Bingo Industries. She has this week been anointed a BOSS Young Executive for 2021.
Years later, with a bachelor of commerce and economics under her belt, Osborne did try her hand at investment banking, joining Credit Suisse in early 2012. After an internship, she ended up in equity capital markets.
