BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The $1.9 trillion pandemic relief bill now heads back to the House of Representatives. It’s the final stop for approval before it lands on President Joe Biden’s desk.
If the American Rescue Plan is approved, that would mean two temporary federal programs would be extended until September.
The extended benefits would continue through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, or PUA, and the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, or PEUC.
“If you’re already receiving benefits, assuming that you remain unemployed and remain eligible for the programs, then you will be able to continue to receive those benefits through September. For a Birmingham woman whoâs unemployed and wants to remain anonymous, she says dealing with the stateâs unemployment claims process is starting to feel like trying to get on one.
âIt puts me in mind of the longest amusement park line,â she says. âYouâre in line for a ride and every time you turn the corner you think youâre a lot closer, but the closer you get the further away you are.â

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Many Americans have lost their jobs and now depend on unemployment in order to get by.
When Sunny Corbertt recently logged on to her claim status, it showed $0 in her account.
She tells us there was several thousand dollars on Monday.
“I almost had a heart attack;” that’s how one Huntsville woman felt when she checked her unemployment payment status Tuesday morning.
“Without warning of any sort, we got cut off today. And I have other friends that got cut off today. And they don’t know what they’re going to do, how they’re going to feed their children this week,” Corbett said.
