Pa says cameras are slowing down drivers in work zones, including Interstate 78 and Route 61 in Berks County

The state s message apparently is out: Slow down in work zones or pay the price. In the first year of a plan to deploy speed zone cameras mounted on police vehicles on interstates and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, motorists are actually slowing down. The cameras detect speed violations in work zones. A ticket is then mailed to the owner of the vehicle. - Advertisement - Speeding violations captured on camera resulted in a 11.6% repeat violation rate, according to a 2021 annual report on the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement initiative. The report concluded that there has been a reduction of 5 to 8 mph on Interstate 78 and Route 61 in Berks County.

Editorial: Pennsylvania traffic safety laws need improvement

The toll of the COVID-19 pandemic has occupied headlines during the past year with rising deaths and public concern. Traffic safety and highway deaths have understandably taken a back seat to the public health crisis of the coronavirus, but that doesn t mean driving safety concerns have gone away. In fact a recent study offers cause for concern in Pennsylvania.  The Keystone State ranks yellow, which means “needs improvement,” when it comes to adopting highway safety laws to prevent fatalities, according to the 18th annual Roadmap of State Highways and Safety Law report. Pennsylvania has only seven of the 16 laws recommended by the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the analysis found.
