Local drum line struts its stuff at MWMF (5/19/2021) The Winona Little Warriors Drumline made a triumphant return to live performances Saturday morning.  Mid West Music Fest hosted the group, which consists of elementary-school-aged kids to preteens. The first act of the day, the drumline performed for a small but enthusiastic crowd that either stood or sat in lawn chairs or on blankets to take in the performance at Prairie Island Campground.  The Little Warriors had been scheduled for the 2020 Mid West Music Fest that was ultimately cancelled because of the pandemic. On Saturday, they did not need a stage, instead parading on the ground as though they were providing the marching beat for real warriors going off to battle. 

Area unsung heroes were honored at 52 Faces of Community Celebration

The work of area volunteers and unsung heroes was honored Wednesday during the New Bern Sun Journal’s 52 Faces of Community Recognition Drive-Thru Celebration at Union Point Park. Now in its fourth year, the event spotlights those individuals featured in the paper’s weekly 52 Faces of Community feature, which focuses on those who have made a positive difference in the community.  Antoinette Boskey-Chadwick was also chosen as this year’s recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service. The award honors “Outstanding Americans who are making a difference.” She will represent Craven County this summer at the national Jefferson Awards event this summer. Past Jefferson Award winners include Tharesa Lee, Ben Watford, and Patti Peebles.

HOUSTON - With the removal of the Texas mask mandate Wednesday, some people are throwing no-mask parties, despite the Houston mayor’s advice not to do so. Federal American Grill on Shepherd Drive in Houston is the scene of one of those parties. Joseph Trahan, founder of Bizpac, organized the mask off champagne toast. He says he’s expecting about 70 people to celebrate the end of the mask mandate beginning at 5:30 Wednesday evening.

He wants to be an electrician and thanks to the new job-readiness program, he’s on his way. “From a young age, I’ve always been interested in technology and stuff like that, so it’d be nice to actually work with it,” said Scott. The City of Danville partnered with Danville Community College (DCC) to start Project Rebuild.
