Whales were fairly plentiful off the Jersey coast from the 17th century to the early 19th century with Colonial settlers posting lookouts from Sandy Hook to Delaware Bay. Once sighted, whalers would set off in small boats to harpoon and kill the mammal, tow it to shore, cut it up and boil the blubber down into oil. Whale oil was used principally as lamp fuel and for producing soap.
