reverberations. one is this video is going to be smuggled into north korea either across the chinese border or over a balloon that goes over the demilitarized zone. so that is going to shake the regime which at this point is already fragile. and so to what extent does the regime try to control the message? well, they always try to control every single message. this is one thing that they really can t control because remember the soldiers and the in the joint security area are the best of the best. here you have someone who has r received years of training. it is difficult for the kim regime to spin this. it is still hard to stomach for lack of a better word to get over those images from the doctors treating him in south korea, the multiple tape worms
good to see you. when you hear more about the defection, how do you assess just how desperate the conditions might be there? oh, the situation in north korea is very tragic. it s very desperate. you ve seen with this dozens of tape worms that came out of the soldier s body, the kind of health, poor health condition, hygienic conditions, that people are living in. this also shows that this information blockade that kim jong-un, that s breaking down. more information is getting into north korea. and so power of south korea is working. the soldier was listening to songs and soap operas and so on. i think it s beyond just trying to have better economic condition. they know more about the outside world and this is why i believe part of the u.s. government s policy has to be trying to bring more information into north korea. and what do you think now of this north korean remedy or deterrent now, this new, you know, forfication along the dmz,
and what they were up against. how rare is what we just saw, harry? brian, it s pretty rare. i mean, keep in mind, usually most people who are trying to defect from north korea, you know, to freedom, essentially, go from to china essentially. so, for somebody to actually cross the dnc, i mean, think about it. this is an area that s usually riddled with mines, hundreds of thousands of soldiers are in this area. tanks, heavy machine guns. this is an area of the world you don t run across. it s pretty astounding. brian: here s the problem. i got these numbers from our brain room here. 881 defections this year in 2017. last year 1418. so considerably down under this leader. the problem with going to china is that they catch you in china, they send you back to north korea. correct? if they catch you in south korea, they leave you in south korea. right now this north korean soldier struggles for life because is he full of infection. they found a lot of stuff in him, including some tape
