Students to compete at New Mexico Poetry Out Loud state finals

Zoom competition on Sunday, March 14 Headlight staff reports SANTA FE – Join six New Mexico high school students via Zoom as they compete to become New Mexico’s Poetry Out Loud state champion at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2021. Admission to the virtual event is free and open to the public.  Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Poetry Foundation and state arts agencies. The New Mexico event is sponsored by New Mexico Arts, a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, with local support from the College of Education and Technology at Eastern New Mexico University.

This year may look a little different as the competition is virtual. Nonetheless, six students will compete to become state champion. ...................... The six finalists – Vanessa Sosa of Arrowhead Park Early College High School in Las Cruces, Analisa Ibarra of La Cueva High School, Barbara Akin of Los Lunas High School, Zoe Sloan Callan of the Native American Community Academy, Michelle Montez of Taos High School and Jenna Tulonen of Volcano Vista High School – earned their shot after competing at the classroom level.

December 31, 1938 – December 25, 2020 Our wonderful, amazing, cherished wife, mother, sister, grandma, and most of all best friend joined her beloved husband Leroy, Viejo as she called him, on Christmas day from the comfort of her own home. Cora was a treasured soul whom instilled her loving touch on everyone’s heart as soon as you met her or she spoke with you. She lived her life at her own pace and on her own time. She would seek knowledge at every turn and read encyclopedias when she ran out of books in the house to keep her mind sharp, and that it was to the very end. She graced this world with her presence on New Year’s Eve (12/31), 1938 in Ute Park, Colfax, NM. Born to Nazario Esquivel and Teresa Romero. She was received in heaven by her parents, husband, and sister Teresa Reyes and heaven won’t ever be the same now that she joins her sister. She gets to meet and cradle 2 great-grandchildren, our beloved’s, Mateo Martinez and Maddox Romero, and cuddle

Taos superintendent honored with national award

One of Taos’s own has been recognized for outstanding achievements in the field of education and mentorship. Lillian Torrez, superintendent of Taos Municipal Schools, is one of four recipients of the 2021 Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award, presented by the American Association of School Administrators. The honorees will be recognized at the AASA’s fully virtual 2021 National Conference on Education in February, 2021. The 2021 Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award is an annual recognition of education leaders committed to the advancement and mentorship of women and minorities or also addressing social justice issues among children and adults in schools. Jones was an educator-turned administrator, counselor and organizer of the Office of Minority Affairs at AASA. As such, she was an advocate and mentor of women and minorities in educational leadership. Equity and opportunity were the hallmark of her life work, and honorees of the Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award ref
