Cars, trucks, and scooters whiz by, forcing me to duck away from the trail of dust thrown into the air.

Here’s why…
For many years, there was only one road leading to Tulum’s stunning beach, which is several miles from the main town. And while Tulum has grown in magnitudes, attracting millions of visitors each year, the capacity of the road has been twiddling. On weekends and holidays, traffic backs up for miles.
Beware of Wannabe Developers
At least, that’s what it brings to mind.
You might recognise the ghost town of Burj Al Babas from the many headlines it generated a couple of years ago.
Burj Al Babas was pitched by the developer as a spa resort, with 732 villas inspired by the Châteaux of the France Loire Valley.
But as you can see, its execution didn’t quiet live up to its promise. Today, it sits unfinished and abandoned…the $200 million punchline of countless online articles.
The ghost town has even become a bizarre attraction for adventurous tourists.
After failing to sell the project, the developer behind Burj Al Babas, in Turkey, left hundreds of identical Disney-like castles abandoned and unfinished.
Zoom Town is Calling
As I write, I’m sitting at a big eight-seater dining table in my polished concrete penthouse Airbnb in Aldea Zama in Tulum.
This is my office space for the week, and where I’ll be getting together with members of my team very soon.
It’s the perfect tropical retreat. An ideal spot for remote working…
But it’s not all Zoom calls. I’m here in Tulum for some old-fashioned boots-on-the-ground scouting. I’m here to take the pulse of one of the fastest-growing markets on my beat, to sit down with developers, meet with architects, and take pitches.

I can’t say I did it to avoid anxiety and stress. If anything, I became an international real estate investor lured by the promise of travel, adventure, and profit.
But since March 2020, when much of the world declared a state of emergency and we saw one of the most dramatic stock market crashes in history, feeling pretty relaxed has been a big benefit of owning a portfolio of income-producing properties around the world.
When I open a newspaper, check social media, or turn on the TV news I am happier than ever that I took this path. I feel blessed.
