Council votes on what GKI infrastructure to endorse

Premium Content Subscriber only Livingstone Shire Council voted not to officially endorse Altum Property Group s and the GKI Progress Association s list of Great Keppel Island infrastructure on Tuesday. The council will, however, write to the State Government that it desires responsible redevelopment of Great Keppel Island using all of the government s committed $30 million, possibly beginning with walking trails, visitor facilities, and more. Also included in the council s resolution was the wish that the State Government speed up its decision regarding GKI leases. Although building on the island is the State Government s prerogative, Altum construction director Rob McCready, who was at Tuesday s meeting, hoped council backing would help break something of a stalemate between the two parties.

Coast land owners face $23k bill for dumped asbestos

A Brisbane family with land at Yeppoon will have to foot a $23,000 bill for the removal and disposal of asbestos, which was illegally dumped at their Buccaneer Avenue vacant lot. On Tuesday, Livingstone Shire councillors spent almost 45 minutes discussing the controversial issue as they grappled with what to do about it. Eventually the majority of councillors supported an officer’s recommendation to decline a request from the land owners to reduce or waive the disposal fees of $11,000. Earlier councillors were told the land owner had requested a quote from a qualified contractor to remove the dumped material, which would see them a further $12,000 out of pocket.
