TUCSON (KVOA) - Tanque Verde Unified School District canceled Wednesday s school board meeting at the recommendation of the Pima County Sheriff s Department after reports of an anti-mask protest surfaced earlier that day.
As this new order allowed K-12 school districts and charter schools still maintain the right to institute and enforce policies to mitigate against COVID-19 spread, including the use of masks, several local school districts, including Vail Unified School District and Tanque Verde School District, elected to maintain its requirement for face masks and coverings while on school grounds.
In response to the governor s recent order, TVUSD said in a statement that it will continue its board policy and board-adopted mitigation plan that requires “all persons, including, but not limited to, staff, students, vendors, visitors, and volunteers, shall wear a mask while on any District property, in any District facility, at any District event, whether indoors or outdoors,

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) -The Superintendent of Vail Unified School District (VUSD) spoke publicly for the first time following a large protest.
On Tuesday,
Wednesday night, Superintendent John Carruth shared a message with Vail parents and the public.
“In the Vail School District, we seek to provide parents with safe and nurturing school communities,” he said. “We have long valued and respected parental choice. We have long valued and engaged listening to our parents. This past year has been incredibly intense and emotional. Providing education during this pandemic has produced an endless series of new challenges that must be overcome. It has brought about many equal, yet opposite, truths. The Arizona Department of Education distributed more than $1 billion in a second round of pandemic relief funds, but local school districts noticed big differences in the allotment amounts that they hope can be addressed before additional funding opportunities.Â
The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) II Funds were distributed in February, and while local schools have expressed their concerns over the formula, the ADE said they do not have the authority to change it.Â
A for Arizona announces public Small Learning Community Grant awardees

A for Arizona announced the seven public school districts and public charter schools launching small learning communities that will receive Expansion and Innovation Fund grants on Jan. 14, 2021.
In a continuation of the work to discover new ways of teaching and learning that is best for students, A for Arizona received a $500,000 grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund in October 2020. The grant is to increase high-quality education options for underserved students through small learning communities. The GEER funding was allocated in the Federal CARES Act this past spring to address disruptions caused by COVID-19 and to support those communities hit hardest by the pandemic.
