Refurbished Wright Twp ice rink set to open Sunday

For the first time in six years, the Wright Twp. ice rink is expected to be open to the public Sunday. Following the tragic death of Mountain Top resident Tanner Kahlau in a skiing accident last week, friends, community member and township employees joined forces to make the repairs needed to get the rink ready for use. “In three days, we turned this rink around,” said Jared McCune, organizer of the effort to restore the rink. “No, it is not perfect and nowhere to where I want it to be. But it will be functional.” Kahlau, 22, was a junior student-athlete at SUNY Fredonia where he was a member of the school’s ice hockey team, a sport at which he excelled. A 2016 graduate of Crestwood High School, he was a multi-sport athlete, starring in ice hockey, football, and lacrosse.

Crestwood board discusses plans for elementary students

Crestwood school’s leaders haven’t decided yet when elementary students will return to in-person classes, which the state recommended for the second semester that starts Feb. 1. “We will have an an announcement shortly,” Superintendent Bob Mehalick said Thursday during a committee meeting with the school board. “There are a lot of things we are still working through. Our goal, our motivation is to get our kids back to some form of in-person instruction.” If students return, Mehalick will recommend they spend a few days a week in classrooms and study from home on other days, as they did before Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, a resurgence of the virus led all classes to meet virtually. Buses and some classes would be too crowded for students to keep 6 feet apart if they returned five days a week, Mehalick said after board member James Costello asked how many days a week students would attend. If elementary students return a few days a week, Costello re
