Hannah couldn t sleep.
She had recently left an abusive relationship and was raising her daughter on her own, so she reached out to her doctor for help.
She was prescribed diazepam, a type of benzodiazepine, and it worked; the drug knocked her cold every night for a year.
Hannah s doctor slowly upped the dose as her body adjusted.
Her weight fell to 45 kilograms and her daughter had trouble recognising her, but Hannah had no idea she was dependent on the drug.
