(Photo by Jodi McGill) LOUISVILLE — In the Republic of Niger, there is roughly one nurse or nurse midwife for every 10,000 people, and the country is not alone in its need. By 2030, the World Health Organization estimates there will be a projected shortfall of 18 million health workers worldwide, mostly in low- and lower-middle income countries. Niger has the highest fertility and population growth rates in the world. It is one of Africa’s most economically impoverished countries and ranks at the bottom (189th) of the United Nations Human Development Index, which measures a nation’s health, education and standards of living, as well as two other elements: a country’s carbon dioxide emissions and its material footprint.

(Contributed photo) LOUISVILLE — Years ago, at a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) youth conference in East Texas, Kurt Esslinger felt the Spirit nudging him toward a ministry that reaches out to people who feel they don’t belong because of their differences. He realized that God loves us for our differences, rather than in spite of them. This call led Esslinger to study at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, and there he met a student from Korea exploring her own call to ministry, Hyeyoung Lee. She helped introduce him to Korean culture, and this friendship led to marriage and eventually to becoming mission co-workers in Korea.

(Photo by Courtney Arntzen) LOUISVILLE — As her college graduation approached, Maggie Lewis remembers feeling that God was calling her to be a missionary in Africa. She didn’t know exactly how to make that happen, so she decided to do some research. “I went to the computer lab and started Googling ‘missionary in Africa,’ and that’s when the Young Adult Volunteer program popped up,” said Lewis, who grew up in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). She initially thought she’d apply to serve as a YAV in Africa or Northern Ireland or Nashville, Tennessee, all of which were among the available YAV sites that year.

Dr. Whitney and Amy Dempsey have a decorative wooden sign hanging in the hallway of their home in Colorado. It’s a Japanese proverb that they both feel summarizes the essence of the work they do: “The sun setting is no less beautiful than the sun rising.” Whitney and Amy work at a Denver metropolitan hospital. Whitney is a hospice chaplain, assisting patients and families at end of life, and Amy is a labor and delivery nurse, welcoming new life into the world. Whitney also serves as a half-time interim pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown and Amy is a ruling elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arvada, where she and the couple’s three children have attended for more than a decade.
