New London Several community members at a City Council meeting Tuesday called for answers regarding how much and when city councilors and the mayor knew about a secretly recorded audio of former police Chief Peter Reichard.
Mayor Michael Passero responded that the matter was handled “as a personnel matter” and handled appropriately at the time and there was no intention to mislead anybody on the issue of the recording.
Reichard had resigned on May 26, after Mayor Michael Passero presented him with a transcript of Reichard’s comments, including that “The politics in this (expletive) little city are worse than anywhere I’ve ever seen” and that in his career he was passed over for promotions because he was white. A New London police officer purportedly made the recording secretly.
