Is this the end of the great British supermodel?

Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss in 1999 No European country has produced as many iconic supermodels as Britain. Sixties fashion was defined by Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, and Cool Britannia could never have reached the heady heights it did without Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and the late Stella Tennant. Cara Delevingne’s extraordinary fame was a precursor to the American Hadid sisters while David Gandy is widely agreed to be one of the best looking men on the planet.  But now, Brexit could threaten to derail the industry and herald the end of the great British supermodel. Fashion Roundtable’s open letter to the Government last month was signed by Twiggy and Yasmin le Bon, among many other models, and detailed how detrimental the Brexit deal has been for international work. Afterwards Le Bon said the ability to travel freely in the EU for work was “crucial” for professionals like herself.

There are more models of colour, but is fashion really diverse?

London, United Kingdom – In September last year, fashion weeks were held in the cultural powerhouse cities of New York, London, Milan and Paris as part of the Spring/Summer 2021 season. Overall, 41.3 percent of models were people of colour, a slight increase from the previous season, which had a rate of 40.6 percent, according to The Fashion Spot, an online magazine that monitors diversity in the industry. However, with the next round of fashion weeks to begin on Sunday, critics say last season’s marginally improved figure was a show of tokenism. They believe much more needs to be done to achieve real diversity – both in front of and behind the camera – while collectively trying to shift industry attitudes to achieve fundamental change.
