About 15 years ago, I had a pet cat named Kitty-Boom. A name he earned due to walking and suddenly throwing himself down. He was a good cat, and he loved to bring us presents. Once, he brought a mole in from our lanai. We had never seen a mole up close, so we weren’t sure what it was.
Then one day, Kitty-Boom came in from the lanai with a coral snake in his mouth. We knew it was a coral snake because the red was touching the yellow stripe, and the rhyme says, “red touches yellow, will kill a fellow.”
It’s that time of the year again: kitten season, when many momma cats give birth to litters and litters of kittens. Realistically, kitten season never ends in Florida, but we do get a minor reduction of litters in the winter. Cold weather states will get a much greater increase in kitten litters beginning in May and slowing in September once the cold weather returns.
We receive a substantial amount of phone calls and social media messages this time of year from residents who have discovered newly born kittens in their shed, under a porch, in their garden, etc. Most experts advise that you do not attempt to separate the kittens from their mother, especially while the kittens are under 8 weeks old, when they’re still usually being weaned. Kittens should stay with the momma cat until they are 12 weeks old, but many part ways at around 8 or 9 weeks.
