12 April 2021 Type Event Proceeding Host Ciaran Lynch, Teagasc Sheep Specialist was joined by Dr. Orla Keane, Teagasc Researcher and Michael Gottstein, Head of Teagasc Sheep KT on this episode of the Let s Talk Sheep webinar series which took place on Thursday, 8th April to discuss nematodirus and coccidiosis in lambs. Dr. Orla Keane from Teagasc discussed Nematodirus infection in young lambs. This is very timely as the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) have just issued their Nematodirus forecast which has indicated that peak hatching and infection will be about a week earlier this year due to higher soil temperature this spring. Orla gave an insight into the symptoms of the disease, what control products to use and how to reduce the risk of infection to lambs.

SHARING OPTIONS: Teagasc research shows that correcting the soil pH from 5.5 to 6.3 for grassland soils can increase the volume of grass grown by 1t DM/ha. Lime and nutrient interactions: There is some discussions regarding fertiliser increasing in price in 2021. While the higher costs will have to be borne by the system, cutting back significantly on volumes applied to lower costs is a false economy and can lead to greater issues down the line if soil P and K levels reduce or if grass growth is significantly curtailed. An area which should receive close attention is ensuring optimum efficiency of applied nutrients.
