Employees at the Seibu Ikebukuro main store in Tokyo are threatening to stage a walkout on Aug. 31, which would be the first strike at a major department store in Japan in more than 60 years.
The Tokyo District Court on March 27 ordered Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) to pay damages to six employees, including Tokaido Shinkansen drivers, whom it refused to grant the vacation days they requested.
Drivers delivering packages ordered through Amazon.com Inc. are joining movements to form labor unions across Japan and demanding better working conditions.
