we re beginning to think it s more common, about 20 po 30% of the people who take paxlovid will end up having another positive test a few days after completing the course or a return of symptoms. and so, i think that the protocol that the white house is using in terms of the two negative tests makes a lot of sense. i should make sure to tell people that is not what the cdc recommends. i think they should recommend that for all americans and not just president biden and jill biden. those two negative tests are very, very important to making sure that when she goes back out into the world that she s not contagious and doesn t infect others. so, it seems like nearly everyday carries with it a headline, a worrisome headline about the monkeypox outbreak. and there s a vaccine shortage. give us your overview as to what you re seeing about the outbreak and how worried americans should be about catching the virus. yeah. i would say the response is struggling.
negative, only to have what they re calling the rebound. after finishing the five-day course, and testing negative at the end of it, the president, like many americans, then tested positive again a couple of days later. now, statistically, they say this is a rare thing. the data says that only two to 6% of people who take paxlovid, face a rebound from covid like this. with a president being one of those people puts a real spotlight on it, and raises some interesting question for future research. the president s doctor said today, importantly, but the president continues to feel well, even though he is still testing positive as of this morning. and that s the important bottom line here, he s okay, paxlovid has been working, it has been working for thousands of americans, you have people alive and out of the hospital, and ideally dealing with relatively mild symptoms, just like the president has experienced. but like the president, people get these rebound cases after completing the cour
[ cheers and applause ] all right, well, after two negative covid tests, president biden is now out of isolation. cnn s kaitlan collins is at the white house with the latest. so kaitlan we know the president will continue to wear a mask for the next few days, ten days actually. what else do we know? reporter: yeah, he is. they re also going to be testing him a lot given he did take paxlovid, that antiviral pill while he had covid-19. there have been some anecdotal stories about people testing positive, rebounding in the several days after testing negative if they ve taken paxlovid. doctors here at the white house have down played that saying when you look at the data, it s actually not that many people who rebound, but they will be testing president biden to make sure he s not one of those people, and so you can expect to see that in the coming days. but also, president biden today was using his own case to kind of make the campaign, to make the case for the latest treatments, bo
point. different from what it was back in 2020. and there is that kind of evolution of thinking and how we think about covid now versus back in 2020 that i think that people still need to have. this gets to the new op-ed that you wrote in the washington post because you you wrote that the president s diagnosis is actually an opportunity here. explain for folks. it s a teachable moment first to let people know about what is the right thing to do once you get covid, that you are supposed to isolate and test as soon as you have symptoms, contact trace, let people know that you were exposed. those were all things that the president did. take paxlovid, also get vaccinated and boosted to protect yourself in advance of getting covid. i think there s something else, too, which is that the president took a lot of precautions including masking, including having people around him test. yet he still got covid. and i m sure we know many people like that in our lives who have been so cauti
