Biomass cofiring loopholes put coal on open-ended life support in Asia

The death knell of coal has been proclaimed, but policy loopholes in Asia allow for cofired power plants, where coal and wood are combined as fuel. Both fuels produce lots of carbon emissions, but those from wood aren’t counted.

WPAC study confirms Canadian wood pellets have a bright future - Canadian Biomass Magazine

WPAC study confirms Canadian wood pellets have a bright future April 7, 2021 First-of-its-kind study in Canada confirms pellets produce 91 per cent less GHGs than coal April 7, 2021 Topics Despite the 4,600 nautical mile sea journey from B.C. to Japan, pellets are still a better renewable and clean energy solution, emitting 91 per cent less GHGs than coal. Photo courtesy WPAC. Over the next five years, it is estimated that the demand for wood pellets will increase 40 per cent to nearly 51 million metric tonnes per year. The growing demand is driven in large part due to countries around the world seeking ways to meet ambitious climate targets in the face of an ever-warming planet.

WPAC Asia conference: wood pellet sector well positioned to support climate action

Nearly 300 delegates from across Asia and North America joined the Wood Pellet Association of Canada (WPAC)’s first-ever Asia Wood Pellet Conference, highlighting the rapid and exciting expansion of pellet production and green energy demand in Canada and key Asian markets. WPAC, together with Canadian Biomass magazine and Canada’s embassies in Japan and South Korea and its trade office in Taiwan, hosted a live online conference called, Energizing Asia with Sustainable Low-Carbon Biomass, on Feb. 17 (Japan Standard Time). Scientists, energy producers, government regulators and forest managers shared insights on the important role of sustainable wood biomass in meeting global greenhouse gas targets, and the data and research that supports the use of wood pellets as a green energy source.
