Farming in Central Maui already holds a unique set of challenges. Add a global pandemic and agriculture operations are tested in a whole new way. So Mahi Pono, the largest agriculture company on Maui, has made key changes to its operations in light of coronavirus. The pandemic affected everything from shipping costs a 46 percent increase in Young Brothers rates took effect last year to in-field work that needed COVID-19 safety protocols. Restaurants and hotels major markets for local produce closed, causing the company to look at the type and scale of its crops.

dgrossman@mauinews.com For those who want to dine out or order takeout this holiday season, a few restaurants across the Valley Isle are offering Christmas meals. • Hula Grill Kaanapali is offering holiday cooking and takeout options, with pre-orders available until the end of today. Individual or family-style takeout meals can be picked up from 2 to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Day. The holiday menu includes kiawe-roasted ham, green bean casserole and candied Molokai sweet potatoes, as well as a family-style honey-baked ham and kiawe chicken dinner with fixings. There’s also a hula pie that serves between eight to 16 people.
