A former senator from a tribal area has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court against the initiation of an inquiry by the Federal Investigation Agency with regard to the import of jet fuel on behalf of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (Nato) support and procurement agency and misuse of customs general orders by various companies.
Taj Mohammad Afridi, a businessman who remained a senator till March 2021, submitted in the petition that a malicious campaign had been initiated against him and his companies after the award of a contract for the supply of jet fuel to the support and procurement agency. He said a complaint was being instigated by unknown persons at behest of his business competitors, political rivals and people who were working against the interest of the country.

PESHAWAR: The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) swept the Senate elections from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by winning 10 of the 12 seats of the Upper House of Parliament on Wednesday.
The PTI clinched five general seats, two of technocrats and women each and one of minorities from the province, while the opposition Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) and Awami National Party (ANP) claimed one general seat each.
However, the government’s ally, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), failed to secure any Senate seat.

PESHAWAR: Speculations and hobnobbing is at its peak as the members of provincial assembly vote today to elect members of the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
As many as 23 candidates are in the run for the 12 seats of the Senate from the province after two contenders retired from the race on Tuesday. The polling will be held in the hall of the provincial assembly in Peshawar.
An official of the Election Commission of Pakistan said two candidates submitted applications for retirement from the contest. They include Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F)’s Tariq Khattak who was a candidate for the general seat and his party colleague Naeema Kishwar contesting for seats reserved for women.

Polling continued until after 5pm in the KP Assembly, where the ECP allowed lawmakers already inside the legislature to cast their votes. Polling did not take place on Wednesday in Punjab where all Senate candidates were elected unopposed last month after disqualification or withdrawal of papers by other contestants.

While the ruling PTI’s numerical strength in the Senate was expected to almost double from the existing 14 seats, the hottest contest was expected between Gilani and Shaikh.

Hours before polling commenced, the contest became even more controversial with the emergence of a video of Gilani s son, Ali Haider, explaining to certain lawmakers how to cancel their votes.
